In 1988 Elsie decided to organize a bunch of recipes she had collected over the years into a three ring binder. In the process she thought, “Why not make my own cookbook?”

With that thought she called her sister Virginia, got her excited, and so The Basics and More Cookbook was born.

With recipes from her own collection and lots of submissions from other Mennonite contributors Elsie and Virginia compiled a well organized, easy-to-use cookbook featuring recipes with basic ingredients. Today, The Basics and More Cookbook is the cookbook of choice in thousands of kitchens across North America.

Sales for The Basics and More Cookbook have exceeded all expectations, and endured through the years, to reach total sales of over 100,000 books.

Ray and Elsie bought Virginia’s share of the cookbook in 1999. In 2005 the book was revised and expanded to the current size of 1300 recipes in 24 categories on 459 pages.

Like all of our cookbooks, The Basics and More Cookbook comes with a complete, double referenced index, making it easy to find any recipe.

All the divider pages and the front cover have original pen and ink drawings done by Elsie.
